Willie Cobbs
encouraged me as a teenaged musician in Greenwood back in the 70s. Later, my
band played some of its first gigs at his Turning Point club in Itta Bena. When
I was beginning my radio career in Greenwood, I would frequently drop by Mr.
C's to have lunch and Willie would talk to me about his experiences as a bluesman
and recording artist. I'll never forget "Mr. C", he was one of the
greats! . . Mark Drummond

I'm a soldier in the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Bragg. I first met Willie in my hometown of Brinkley, AR in 1993. A friend owned an automotive repair shop and performed repair work for Willie and another bluesman, John Weston. He and Willie were from the same area just south of Brinkley.
They were generous with their music and often would pull out a guitar and play a few of their tracks. Willie's sound and style were something I had never seen or heard. It was out of the norm of traditional blues. It was upbeat with a slightly faster tempo.
Willie would give me his albums out of the trunk of his car whenever a new one came out. The last time I spoke to him was in a phone conversation in 2007. I had left the Brinkley area in 2001 and had lost touch with both he and John.
That's when I found out that John had passed. I asked him if he was going to record anymore and he said probably not. He was getting up in years and wasnt able to do much or travel frequently as he had in the past. I believe he told me then that he was 77 years old.
Willie was very down to earth and very friendly. His music, I had heard, had even turned the ear of Eric Clapton, BB King and other blues artists. Willie is a talent that can never be duplicated. God broke the mold when he made Willie and gave him that talent. I enjoy his music even to this day. It never grows old. Michael Partain 5/29/09
